Butter in Fall

I have to say Fall is my favorite season, wearing boots, dressing up for Halloween, cooler weather, too many reasons to count.  Another to add to the list is to bust out my new favorite red nail polish I just bought from Butter London. I love this metallic red, it is so rich in color. I love the finish on my toe nails.

Butter’s products are formulated without the use of the harmful ingredients like Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP or Parabens and was the first company to sell non-toxic nail lacquer in the United States. The colors to choose from are amazing check out the ButterLondon website for more.

Smell you later summer! Oh wait..it’s 100 degrees out…bullocks.

Power Smoothie

Happy Friday! I want to share a recipe for a “Power Smoothie” I made this morning. I will be going out of town this weekend heading up to northern California for several days. While I know there will be plenty of Super Food heading north on the 5 highway (NOT), I thought I would get one last dose of highly powerful foods (hence the name) to load up on before we leave. I use Parsley which is super high is iron, extra protein, greens and chia seeds for added omegas.

I want to share this because even though it is very green is it also very tasty! If you feel like you could use a dose of goodness try this. If you don’t have all of the ingredients no worries, this is not easy to mess up. Just utilize what is in your fridge and don’t forget to give it to your whole family, this is a huge serving, the blender will be full. If you are not used to the green taste add a banana or sweetener like Stevia. You can store the leftovers in a glass mason jar if you have any at all. Here we go!

Add the following ingredients in your blender in the following order:

3-4 cups of water depending on how thick you like your smoothie (add an avocado for added creaminess)

2-3 Cups of greens (I use a mix of Spinach, Swiss Chard and Kale)

1 Cup Parsley

1 T Gogi Berries, Chia Seeds, Green powder of your choice

1 Scoop of Protein Powder (I use Sunwarrior Vanilla)

1 Cup Frozen Mango

1 Cup  Frozen Pineapple

Blend, drink and feel really good.

Baking Soda, is there anything it can’t do?

The more I learn about all of the harmful ingredients in our homes the more it makes me want to switch some of that out. One of the last times I cleaned my bathroom I actually felt sick afterward, I knew the powerful cleaning agents were getting to me. The fumes we inhale and that leach onto our skin from strong chemicals and even less obvious personal care products are adding up. I am trying to take a good hard look at these and make better choices. This is where baking soda comes in.

I can’t believe I am just now using baking soda in more ways than the occasional teaspoon here and there in baking. I remember my grandma brushing her teeth with it when I was young but that is pretty much it. For one thing,  this is one the greatest cleaning products I have ever used and the options for it are endless! My son scribbled all over my table and I used baking soda to remove it all. Here are some other ways to use this extremely safe and CHEAP product:

Toothpaste and deodorant

Cleansing agent-so many uses. Couple with Lemon Oil and Vinegar to clean tough jobs

Use it while vacuuming to help with odor

Diaper Rash-Sprinkle in bath water

Cleans your fruits and vegetables

There are many DIY recipes out there but you can just start by playing around with it. I used cornstarch, coconut oil and essential oils to a baking soda base and made my own deodorant. It actually worked! I have to say it feels good to a product like baking soda that actually works and that isn’t toxic. Post a comment if you have any great DIY recipes for Baking Soda you would like to share!

The wonder oil-Lavender

Recently I began using essential oils in my everyday life. I bought a variety of pure grade oils that can help me manage everything from stress to killing germs to prevent colds. I have been using essential oils since I started in the skin care industry topically and love the powerfully healing properties that they bring to the skin and treatments I would perform. Now it’s been fun to use them in other areas in my life!

One of the most popular and versatile oils is Lavender. I mean what DOESN’T”T this oil help with?! This is the first oil I grabbed and have been using it almost daily. Here are some of the most common benefits that can be achieved with Lavender:

Pain Relief

Stress

Burns

Insect Bites

Insomnia

Eczema

There are several ways to use essential oils. You can apply topically to the skin with a carrier oil (such as coconut or avocado), aromatically by using a diffuser or take them internally if you have a certified pure brand of oil. I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to finally get a diffuser but I am loving it. I run it all day and night. Of course at night I am diffusing and sleep has been amazing thanks to the Lavender oil.

I use doTERRA oils, if you are interested in learning more check out the website Here.

Eat your broccoli, wear your broccoli

Many of you who regularly read my blog may wonder why I talk about nutrition and food so much on a skin care site. I am a true believer that what we do for our bodies internally directly impacts the quality of our skin. After all it is the largest organ and usually the first organ to sound off an alarm if there is something wrong. Having a foundation of healthy eating is always a good thing when skin is concerned, although not the only factor. We also need to care for our skin topically and help it look its best.

I have written many times about Sircuit Cosmeceuticals, this product line uses very concentrated pure ingredients that deliver results. It is a line that takes many of the cutting edge ingredients of today with some of the natural extracts and even food based ingredients that we all know taken internally can reap great results for our health.

I love the Clarity Broccoli Sulfur Mask because as a clay based mask it is not drying and even with my bone dry skin I can use it. This is an ideal product for acne prone, oily or congested skin types as it pulls at impurities in the skin and evens out oiliness.  Because of the antibacterial effects it helps prevent the spread of the infection and is also healing to any possible inflammation. And with such amazing ingredients as Tea Tree, Broccoli, Spirulina and Zinc you will feel a difference after each use. Check out Sircuits Website to see a full list of ingredients and more company information.

After masking you can also warm up a big bowl of broccoli for dinner, can’t hurt right?

Nice Buns!

I began searching for some quick ways to make myself more presentable a couple weeks ago since my time to get ready is quite limited in the mornings. Putting make-up on and fixing my hair in the bathroom together with my toddler is special. My goal is to be done before he has taken everything in the bathroom and placed it into the toilet. This gives me about five minutes. Understandably the hair department has suffered, wearing my hair up is a must and you most likely will see me with a hat on.

Until recently when I heard of the Bun maker. I love it and how it helps me look like I actually did something cute with my hair. There are two types that I like and both work nicely. The Conair bun maker and a long black clip type:

You can buy the Conair Bun Maker at Ulta Stores and the other one on Amazon, just search in Google. I checked out some of the how-to-videos on You tube for instructions that were really helpful. You can even find videos on how to create great buns without buying anything. These two items are really affordable, starting at a buck and going up to 5 dollars.

Have fun making your cute buns!

It’s getting hot in here!

ultra sensitive tint spf30

It’s bloody hot. I’ll admit I am a total sissy when it comes to the heat. My strategy is to lock myself in the house and become a shut in (thank you AC). For those of you crazy people who actually want to get out and do stuff here are some helpful skin care related tips and products I would use if I left my house.

The best way to protect yourself from the sun is to cover up of course! I always wear a hat at the pool or even going outside when the heat is up. And I don’t have to do my hair, win-win. I just bought a Roxy hat, check out there super cute selection: Roxy Hats

Wear a sun protection that has some color so you can forgo the foundation. Many people who are prone to breakouts have more problems in the heat when wearing a rich makeup base so keep it light. I like Dermalogica Ultra Sensitive Tint this has an SPF of 30 and no artificial fragrances or colors. Plus key antioxidants such as green tea and grape seed extracts help protect your skin against sun rays even further.

If you happen to get a sun burn its important to treat your skin often with something healing. I like using Aloe, you can buy a pure aloe at most drug stores. I like to keep it in the fridge to treat a burn (ahhhhhh). Or an even better idea is to buy an aloe plant and break open a leaf to extract the aloe. Apply directly to skin. These plants are so easy to grow and look pretty cool too.

Coconut Obsessed!

Super Hydrating Body Wash

I have to admit I am a little coconut obsessed. I drink coconut water and milk, cook with coconut oil and love coconut desserts. After learning about some of the many benefits it has to offer it makes coconut taste even better! Many people have begun to use Coconut Oil topically for all of the medicinal and healing properties it offers, there are literally hundreds of benefits with this truly amazing oil. Both topically and internally.

So when I saw the Everyday Coconut Super Hydrating Body Wash I was gitty to say the least. I have tried and reviewed other products from the Everyday Shea Line which are of excellent quality. The company does not use Parabens, harsh Sulfates, artificial fragrance and never tests on Animals. Alaffia gives back to the community in which they derive their pure ingredients from, making it a company I love to personally support. Check out the link to learn more about this program: Empowerment

The Super Hydrating Body Wash is best for Normal to Drier skin types because of the nourishing properties and feel. The coffee berry extract helps protect the skin with its high antioxidant value and the coconut is rich essential amino acids and minerals. Even if you don’t love the smell of coconut you can use this body wash because there is no fake scents, it is completely natural.

If you want to learn more about Coconut Oil and different cool uses for it, check out Make Coconut Not Fat they are even more obsessed than me.

I gotta run, time to make my Coconut Flour Pizza Crust.

Avocado-SSF!

Another edition to my Super Skin Food series is Avocado. This super fruit is completely amazing for the skin and the entire body. Rich in Essential Fatty Acids, avocado helps nourish dry skin and vitamins such as E and C rehydrate and soothe.

A few other beneficial reasons to eat Avocado:

  • Helps speed up metabolism because of the GOOD fat (health-promoting monounsaturated fats)
  • Amazing for lowering cholesterol
  • Rich in Potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin B6 among other vitamins
  • Disease prevention

This super food was actually the first food I wanted my son to eat and he loved it. Some of the many ways in which I eat avocado are in a smoothie, blended in a soup or spread on a tortilla with a sprinkle of sea salt. Some people use raw avocado as a facial mask but quite honestly I have never been a fan of goops of food on my face. Maybe that’s just me. I just try and eat at least 1/2 of one every day.

If you are interested in trying avocado topically try an avocado oil at night (can be found at a health food store). It’s a natural way to reap the benefits of this wondrous Super Skin Food!

Omica Water Filter

Omica Shower Filter

This may seem like a rather funny topic to share for a skin care blog but I am loving the Omica Shower Filter! I first learned about this product while learning about the dangers of the bathing in tap water without a filter while hearing a lecture from Robert G. Wright, Founder and Director of the American Anti-Cancer Institute. I had no idea of the dangers of chlorine entering the lungs before listening to him speak. A long hot shower just happens to be one of my favorite things so I knew that I needed a filter pronto!

I searched for a filter that was highly rated and I found the Omica brand. These are the benefits as listed on the site:

• Helps Remove: Fluoride, Chloramine, Chlorine, Lead (100%)
• Twice the filtration Medium of most other shower filters
• More head room than most other shower filters
• Invigorating and refreshing experience
• No replacement cartridges needed, allowing more space for more filtration medium
Lasts up to 8 months, then replace entire filter

So great, now I feel like I am more protected from these harmful toxins, insert sigh of relief here. What I did not expect to experience was how much softer and less dry my skin became, fast. Like after the first shower. My skin is starting to feel more like my 20 month sons skin and less like the lizard I found in the backyard yesterday. My husband has a patch of psoriasis on his face and it is almost completely healed.

This is a great investment for healthy living and in our case, softer skin! To learn more about the filter visit Omica Organics and if you or a loved one has cancer please look into the American Anti-Cancer Institute for some amazing resources and free advice. Great site for preventative tips as well.

Here’s to your health!
