It’s getting hot in here!

ultra sensitive tint spf30

It’s bloody hot. I’ll admit I am a total sissy when it comes to the heat. My strategy is to lock myself in the house and become a shut in (thank you AC). For those of you crazy people who actually want to get out and do stuff here are some helpful skin care related tips and products I would use if I left my house.

The best way to protect yourself from the sun is to cover up of course! I always wear a hat at the pool or even going outside when the heat is up. And I don’t have to do my hair, win-win. I just bought a Roxy hat, check out there super cute selection: Roxy Hats

Wear a sun protection that has some color so you can forgo the foundation. Many people who are prone to breakouts have more problems in the heat when wearing a rich makeup base so keep it light. I like Dermalogica Ultra Sensitive Tint this has an SPF of 30 and no artificial fragrances or colors. Plus key antioxidants such as green tea and grape seed extracts help protect your skin against sun rays even further.

If you happen to get a sun burn its important to treat your skin often with something healing. I like using Aloe, you can buy a pure aloe at most drug stores. I like to keep it in the fridge to treat a burn (ahhhhhh). Or an even better idea is to buy an aloe plant and break open a leaf to extract the aloe. Apply directly to skin. These plants are so easy to grow and look pretty cool too.

JOURNÉE Bio-restorative Day Cream

I recently tried JOURNÉE by Neocutis, a super potent day cream with an SPF of 30 +. This product is loaded with powerful age fighting ingredients such as Green Tea, Vitamins C and E, Hyaluronic Acid and PSP (a blend of Human growth factors and other age fighting proteins).

Because of the ingredient combination this product is much more than just a sun protector. It applies smoothly onto the skin with a beautiful finish due to the reflective properties used to protect skin from the sun. There appears to be a slight tint but I learned the combination of ingredients causes the color and can still be used on any skin tone.

This is a higher price point than most of the products I review but you can justify the price tag if you consider this product is a serum, moisturizer and SPF in one! You can read more about Neocutis and the rest of the line here.

MythBusters-Skin Care Edition

From time to time I hear a friend or someone at a spa say something that is just not true in relation to skin care and cosmetics. Here are some of the doozers I have heard:

1. You need to use the same skin care line for all of your products.

Really, why? I am sure the woman behind the counter at the mall would love you to believe this. Use what works for you, if that means using an exfoliation from Dermalogica and your favorite cleanser from SkinCeuticals, do it.

2. When a product turns color and starts to smell-it’s still good.

Well, as much as you want to believe that your $80.00 Vitamin C serum is still good to put on your face even though you have to hold your breath to apply, don’t do it. Products do not last forever, it is important to remember the date you opened it and toss it out when the product turns. Because at this point the product is rancid.

3. The more you exfoliate the better for your skin.

My friends in the beauty industry are most guilty of this, even though they know better! (you know who you are.) Over exfoliation can lead to a break down of healthy skin, sensitivity and even premature aging! Follow the directions of your products and a good rule of thumb for over the counter peels is two to three times a week.

4. You don’t need SPF on cloudy days.

Come on people, we know harmful UV rays can penetrate though a hazy sky, apply it every day no matter what.

5. Natural Products are the best.

Next time your friend says she only uses “natural products” on her skin ask her what the definition of that is. Just because a product says “natural” doesn’t mean it is. There is no legal consequence for putting natural on a label when it is not because there is no legal definition. I have seen a natural line include fragrance and other items most would not consider natural so read your labels and make your own choices. As for making your own products at home, be careful. You don’t want to be smearing a bunch of bacteria and oxidized food from your fridge on your face now do you?

Do your own research and just remember not everything on the web is accurate when it comes to cosmetics or anything else for that matter. Always consider your source and what their interests are. If you have heard something skin care related you are a little iffy about please let me know!

My A.M. Beauty Routine-Part 2

Part two of my morning beauty routine, make-up:

Concealer: I like the Healthy Skin Brightening Eye Perfector by Neutrogena. I have been using it for years, it has a firming quality to it and an SPF. I can buy it at Target-score!

Foundation: Skin Foundation SPF 15 by Bobbi Brown has a light/medium coverage with added sun protection. Perfect for everyday and I love the pump applicator.

Blush: I started using the Powder Blush in Mocha by Chanel when I worked for Chanel at Macy’s, one of my all time favorites.

Eye Liner: I go back and forth between liquid eye liner and pencil. When I use pencil I like the Eye Dream Hyperliners by Tarina Tarantino. The pencil is super soft and the application is easy.

Eye Lash Curler: I try a new Mascara wand all the time but one thing I always keep the same is the Shu Uemura Eye Lash Curler, it is the best.

Shimmer Brick by Bobbi Brown: I use this on my cheeks and eye lids to brighten my face, I love the Pink Quartz color.

This one is for you Wendy, enjoy!

My A.M. Beauty Routine-Part 1

I had a special request to share my personal skin care and make-up routine. This is what I am currently doing but I have different routines based on new products I am testing and also what condition my skin is in at the time. This post will focus on my morning skin care regimen and the next will entail my cosmetic routine, enjoy!

Step 1. Cleanse-Gentle cleanser by SkinCeuticals. This is gentle enough to use for most any skin type, hydrating but does not leave skin feeling oily. I like to cleanse in the shower with my Clarisonic Brush (of course!).

Step 2. Tone-Molecular Mist by Sircuit. Click on the link to learn why I love this product. After getting out of the shower I will mist with this toner before I layer my products.

Step 3. Treat-Red Wine Resveratrol Antioxidant Serum by 100% Pure. I use a rich serum during the day because my moisturizer is light weight. This serum is also great at night because it is so rich.Step 4. Moisturizer/SPF –Multi-Vitamin Day Crème SPF 30 by Kerstin Florian International. I usually am rushing in the morning so having a combo moisturizer and SPF saves me time. I love how this nicely this blends into the skin.

Step 5. Eye Care-Total Eye Care SPF 15 by Dermalogica. Extra SPF around the eye area and helping to conceal my dark circles? No brainer! I like to give my eye area extra love in the day time and I apply my cream very gently.

ORGANIC POMEGRANATE ANTIOXIDANT HYDRATION SPF20

I had such a huge response from my last post about 100% Pure Coffee Bean Eye Cream I decided to test another product from the line. This time I was looking for a light 2 in 1 moisturizer/SPF combo. The Organic Pomegranate Antioxidant Hydration with a SPF of 20 is a perfect lightweight lotion that can be used with so many skin types. Because I am a  dry I layer a richer serum before I apply this and it gives me enough hydration. For an oily/combo skin this would be enough on its own.

The sun protection is mineral based (Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide) in combination with antioxidants such as Pomegranate, White Tea and Grapefruit. And you can’t complain about the price tag at 26.00 bucks! Check out the website to learn more about the product: 100% Pure

Le Blanc Spa Resort

I could write a small book of praise regarding my stay at Le Blanc Spa Resort and the total blissful experience my husband and I shared for our honeymoon. However, this is a blog so I will do my best to keep it short although I want to share every last heavenly detail. In the past I have traveled extensively for my jobs with different luxury brands and have experienced many four and five star hotel spas so I was really picky when it came to my personal holiday (this choice took me almost as much time as planning my wedding!).

We chose Le Blanc in Cancun because it is a short (and direct) flight from LA, it is all inclusive, has an amazing spa and they really cater to honeymooners/couples. I had high hopes because I had done my research but was still completely blown away!

If you enjoy going to the spa on your vacation (and who doesn’t?!) you will not be disappointed. We spent quite a bit of time there (that is according to my husband-I could’ve gone every day), each service we experienced was amazing. The staff was highly trained and the facility was spectacular. I loved the water wall, foot massage station and the co-ed relaxation room. The fitness area is state of the art and there is a classroom where you could take yoga, reformer pilates and even personal training sessions (ALL included). We did it all, even a sunset yoga class overlooking the water. At least starting the day in the gym made me feel better about lunch time Bloody Marys and  7 course gourmet dinners paired with wine.

We stayed for 2 weeks and I was STILL sad to leave-it really felt like home. If you are looking for a destination resort for a special occasion please check out Le Blanc Spa Resort. We would have spent quadruple what we spent for the value of our stay. It was truly an experience I will never forget and one I think of often.

FAQ-Skin care edition

Over the years in the treatment room and in trainings I have been asked questions that seem to repeatedly come up. Here they are with my answers/opinions below:

Q. Should I put on my skin care products on dry or wet skin?

A. Always moist skin. If by the time you are applying product when your skin is dry just spray with a toner of your choice. This will help your products penetrate further making them more effective.

Q. In what order do I apply my products?

A. Cleanse, tone, treat/serum, eye cream, moisturize, SPF (A.M.) If using an exfoliation or mask apply after toning the skin and use an exfoliation before a mask.

Q. How to apply eye cream.

A. iCare

Q. Should I wash my face in the AM if I washed it the night before?

A. Yes. Oils from the hair or on your pillow should be removed. If you are not oily you can do a quick tone with a hydrating toner if you do not want to over-wash and then apply daily products.

Q. Should I wear sun protection if I am not laying out in the sun?

A. Sun protection should be applied daily even if you are not going to the beach. We get sun more than we realize (walking to into buildings at work and driving in the car) safer to be protected.

Q. When is the best time to exfoliate?

A. Best time is at night so you will not be immediately exposed to the sun. Be diligent about using sun protection the following morning.

Q. What are the most important things to do to prevent dehydration on a plane?

A. Drink tons of water, limit alcohol (but you are not taking mine away) and wear an extra hydrating serum/moisturizer. Be sure to wear SPF, you are much closer to the sun!

Q. Some tips to prevent acne on your forehead and chin.

A. Pull hair back at night, wash pillowcases regularly, clean phones (especially cell phones and work phones-the cleaning crew doesn’t!) and stop touching your face!

Q. How MUCH product should I use?

A. Click here

Q. How often to get a facial?

A. Best case scenario 4-6 weeks. This is hard for most people so maintain with at home treatments.

Q. What is the best device I can use for my skin?

A. It all starts with a properly cleansed skin. Using a Clairsonic brush will change your skin…for the better of course!

That is all for now, I will update this as I think of more or leave a comment asking your own skin care questions!
