About 10 years ago everyone at my work was dieting with the lemonade diet and losing weight. I wanted to lose five pounds so I was in! By day two I was getting dizzy and my dogs food smelled really good. I decided to stop, gained the two pounds of water weight back plus more and permanently slowed my metabolism. What a win!
I recently was thinking of this story because it can be the same with our skin, we want the fast fix without first trying the basic things we should be doing. Instead of fasting with lemon salt water I should have started with a healthy diet and exercise. I have a lot of people asking me about expensive and sometimes invasive procedures to help their skins appearance. So today I am going back to the basics with three easy steps to get your skin game going strong. Even if you decide to go forward with more advanced procedures you will see even better results if you are doing these things first. Or you may find you see such an improvement you stick with these tips and save yourself some $$$ and recovery time!
This is the most effective way to help shed those dead skin cells sitting on the surface of the skin making it hard to get your products to penetrate in. Fine lines and wrinkles look more defined when you are not regularly exfoliating and skin has less of a glow. I say start here and be consistent! I keep one in the shower so I can remember to regularly exfoliate. I can see a difference when I do. And most products only take a few minutes so it won’t be a challenge to fit this step in.
Hydration in the skin is the best way to plump out fine lines and give your skin a beautiful glow. But many people I talk to are not using a serum or a hydrator under their moisturizer (or even using an effective moisturizer). After I use my Simply Jess toner I apply my serum and then my moisturizer. This helps to ensure I have the hydration I need. And of course hydrate internally not just topically. Drinking enough water makes a huge difference in the skin. Especially if you are consuming dehydrating drinks such as coffee or alcohol, (Me? Never!). Add something like lemon, electrolytes or fruit to jazz up your water so that it doesn’t feel so boring to drink.
I know how easy it is to dismiss this one. I can certainly tell a difference in my skin when I have actually had a good nights sleep. It seems like the norm to be sleep deprived and I have finally started to take this seriously. During the night our skin is rejuvenating (along with our brain and everything else in the body), so it is crucial to try to get some solid sleep. After my camping trip when I slept a good 30 minutes one night, my skin definitely was not looking its best. I know for the moms who are reading this it can seem difficult to get all the sleep we need but its so important to help us feel and look better. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing!
Are you exfoliating, hydrating and sleeping enough?
This post is for all my OC peeps! One of the questions I am asked the most is, where should I go for a facial treatment? I currently do not perform facials for the public but I have a wonderful esthetician to share with you.
Kellie with Skin Care on the Lake by Kellie, is my go to esthetician that helps keep my skin looking healthy. I know of her talent because she was the esthetician that helped train me back in 2003! She has 30 years experience in this industry and facials are her specialty. She believes that beautiful skin starts with healthy skin. Kellie teaches people to care for their skin on a daily basis and treats them regularly to achieve the best results. She also believes this is an important step before getting medical/clinical treatments for optimal results.
Kellie has three key products and steps for keeping skin healthy and youthful and steps she herself takes everyday. I won’t disclose her age but you would not believe it if you saw her, her skin is flawless.
1. Skinceuticals PHLORETIN CF®
This is a day time serum and a powerful antioxidant. An amazing serum for sun damage, a collagen builder and environmental protector.
2. RETINOL 1.0 Retinol cream
Retinol is used to promote cell renewal and improve signs of aging skin. This is a night treatment and helps smooth the skin while you sleep.
3. Sun Protection
Lastly after caring for your skin with highly potent serums it is important to protect the skin from free radical damage and the sun. Kellie uses a daily sun protection on her skin as well as when you leave her treatment room.
Kellie uses Skinceuticals and Dermalogica in her treatment room and in her retail. She does a 60 minute facial or 90 (but always goes longer!) and customizes each treatment especially for your skin. You can find Kellie at the links below on her Instagram or Facebook.
*She currently has a promotion going on, buy Pholretin CF and receive a Physical Matte UV Defense sunscreen for FREE! Check Kellie out, she is a talented esthetician and wonderful person!
The last few weeks I have had people asking me about my skin and commenting on how it is glowing. My secret? I had a visit with my friend and skin care expert Lili! I love her philosophy which is right in line with mine. A holistic approach to skincare that is advanced in its results. I had the most wonderful facial and the results have continued well after my treatment a few weeks ago.
After cleansing Lili exfoliated in conjunction with the Ultrasonic machine which I love. After extractions she used micro-current and Lightstim light therapy.
The micro-current tightens and tones the facial muscles as well as stimulating collagen and elastin while softening fine lines. The micro-current machine Lili uses in her studio is the one I have seen the best results with.
I have been a huge fan of light therapy particularly the “red light” because of the amazing results, no downtime or damage to the skin and science behind it. For plumping, evening out the skin tone and as an overall anti-aging treatment this can not be beat! Not all red light treatments are the same and I have not seen as great of results with others but I love the LightStim.
No wonder my skin was glowing after this! Check out Lili’s website here to learn about the many facial treatments she offers and also how you can customize your treatment based on your needs. I love how there is the option to target any skin type. And she is just a pleasure to be around! For me it was a bit of a drive from Orange County as she is in Santa Monica but it was well worth it.
I will be reviewing her two products that I took home, I can tell this has helped continue my results. Check out the Lili Mineni Skin care line here. I am especially loving the Vitamin A serum at night!
I have been a fan of Kerstin Florian products for many years and use them on a daily basis. When the latest product, Clarifying BerryPlus Repair Serum, was announced I could not wait to try it. I have been using this serum daily for a few weeks and I love the results.
With natural ingredients that are highly effective the skin feels hydrated, smooth and is protected. Camu Camu and goji berry extracts help protect skin from sun damage while Raspberry Leaf extract and Rose oil help hydrate and calm skin.
- Rich in antioxidants
- Super lightweight
- Deeply Hydrating
I love this product for men as well, it is great post-shave. To use this product, apply on cleansed skin underneath moisturizer. It is sure to be a huge hit with pretty much any skin type!

October is here! Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. The holidays, comfort foods and excuse to bring out my scarves. I am patiently waiting because apparently Southern California has not got the memo that summer is over. When the weather does begin to change, it is helpful to make some adjustments to our skin care routine. Below are a few helpful hits to transition your summer skin care to fall ready.
1. Treat Summer Sun Damage.
Post summer is a great time to begin exfoliating regularly again and treating yourself to a great facial treatment. If you spent a lot of time outdoors this summer try adding a antioxidant serum to help with sun damage.
2. Protect Lips
As the colder months approach keep lips hydrated and protected from the dry weather. I like to layer my Simply Jess Lip Balm on top of my lipstick to protect and keep them nice and hydrated. Or simply wear it alone.
3. Upgrade Your Moisturizer
This is the time of year to update your moisturizer, one that is richer and more protecting. Or better yet you can add a super charged serum to your existing routine. I am in love with the SkinCeuticals Hydrating B5 Gel. The combination of vitamin B5 along with hyaluronic acid makes the skin feel velvety and extremely hydrated without feeling heavy. This is a great product for any skin type and helps your existing moisturizer leave skin looking plumped up. I love it under make-up as well.
Do you switch up your regimen with the seasons? Let me know in the comments below. And Happy Fall!
One of the most common skin care concerns I have seen, no matter what the skin type, is dehydration. I have had clients with acne and oily skin have terrible dehydration. Typically skin that is dried out through the use of harsh ingredients is left even more vulnerable to further oil production and acne breakouts, due to the skin overcompensating. It’s a vicious cycle. It is with this skin type that you want to hydrate the skin with a water based ingredient versus an oil. Drier skin types that lack oil can also be lacking hydration in the skin. Almost everyone I see is dehydrated to some degree.
Nicely hydrated skin is always the goal, it’s what gives us the “dewy look” or that glowing skin we desire. Wrinkles look less defined and make-up glides on beautifully. One of my favorite ingredients to achieve hydration is Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic Acid is found within the body, in the eyes and joints. One of my favorite qualities of it, is that it binds moisture from the air, up to 1,000 times its own weight in water. This makes it super powerful for delivering hydration without the heavier feel of an oil. Because of the plumping effects, this ingredient is even used as an injectable wrinkle reducer and for lip plumping in many plastic surgery/medical spa facilities.
One of my favorite topical serums containing this potent ingredient is Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum by Hylunia. It glides on the skin and is instantly penetrated, leaving the skin feeling light and smooth. It is oil-free making it a great moisturizer option for a acneic or oily skin type. Due to my dry skin, I use it underneath my moisturizer as a hydrating booster and it makes my skin feel silky and smooth. This product is for everyone, it is extremely gentle and even healing for more extreme skin conditions like Eczema and Psoriasis.
Check out the Hylunia website for more information, they offer free shipping with no minimum order!
