Top Three Tips for Kick Butt Skin

My top three tips for healthier looking skin are pretty much the same for any skin type. If you have been neglecting your skin and it shows, try these simple steps and see if it helps!

1. Exfoliate– So are you exfoliating at home on a regular basis? I think this is an important step so many clients I talk to are missing! Whether your concern is dehydrated/ dull skin or congestion and oiliness, exfoliating will help. Getting rid of the top layer of skin will help bring healthy cells to the skins surface. Don’t get crazy and over exfoliate to make up for lost time, that will do more damage than good. Click here to see a few of my favorites if you need to purchase one (hint one of my favorites is from Dermalogica): Exfoliate

2. Hydrate- A few days of not drinking enough water, having too much caffeine or alcohol or not using hydrating skin care can show up instantly in the skin. When the skin is dehydrated every fine line is amplified and looks more aged. That is why people with oilier skin types tend to have less fine lines than us ‘dry as the desert’ skin types. Along with internal hydration I love using a topical serum to help hydrate and plump up the skin, makes a beautiful difference under make-up too.

3. Sleep- Sleep is crucial for absolutely everything, it is when we recharge our brains, when human growth hormone is released and when are cells are regenerating. I cringe as I type this one, it has not been a good year of sleep for me. I am more clumsy, I am constantly dropping things and my memory has not been good. It totally shows in my skin as well, you can tell I just look tired. A good nights sleep makes a world of difference in our skin and the way we feel so if you can, get more sleep. I know it is hard, trust me, but it helps tremendously.

If you are feeling like your skin needs a boost, try these three tips and then let me know if you see any results! What are your go to skin remedies? Share in the comments below!

3 Must Have Cosmetics When Feeling Old and Tired!

Well this title sums up how I have been feeling lately, especially after just having a birthday.  I decided I needed to update a few items in my cosmetics bag and get my glow back! Since my baby is still not sleeping through the night I am tired much of the time and it shows. I decided to treat myself and buy a few items that can help me fake looking rested a bit and give me a little boost. Even though on a daily basis I keep my routine very simple,  I have been adding these three steps to help brighten my skin and face.

1. Concealer-As we age the fine lines around the eye area increase and if you are not sleeping, the dark circles get darker. Apply your favorite concealer to the under eye area and eye lids and blend in. This always needs to be a shade lighter than your skin color. You can add concealer to your lip area and blend in to help lipstick application look smoother too.

2. Highlighter– This makes a huge difference! It is a very subtle tool that brightens the whole face and just makes the skin look fresh. Hardly noticeable but it makes my skin look especially brighter if I am tired. Make a ‘C’ shape around your eyes, lightly down the nose and a touch above the lip. My new favorite addition to my routine.

3. A Great Foundation– I like my skin to look dewy and even, but then again who doesn’t? This step starts with a great moisturizer and serum, but more on that in another post. I bought a new Bobbi Brown make-up brush for applying my foundation and it works great. An investment but those brushes last forever if you take care of them.

That’s it! Just a few extra steps and I feel much better. What are your favorite tricks to look more awake? What about favorite highlighters or concealers?

I recently signed up for a free trial with Thrive Market and am loving it! If you haven’t yet heard of Thrive Online Market, it is a new website that offers high quality, non-gmo and super healthy products at a discount. They have products ranging from food pantry items, green cleaning and beauty supplies to baby items all offered at a 25-50% off discount! How it works is they offer a membership, like a Costco card, you pay annually and then you are able to purchase directly through Thrive and have items delivered to you.

One thing I love about Thrive is the mission to make healthy living, food and personal care accessible to everyone. They even donate a membership to a low income family for each membership sold. Super awesome.

So far I have purchased, hand soaps, cleaning supplies and lots of food items. If you purchase over 49.00 your order ships free. The great thing is you can try it out for free before you commit to a membership, I have already saved a lot on items I would normally be buying at the health food store. And I love when my food arrives on my doorstep, so convenient! Click here to check out the store and start a free trial (affiliate link).  Happy shopping!

Help! My Tween is Breaking Out!

Rehydrating Neroli Water

Lately I am getting a ton of questions regarding the tween age child and breakouts. I am going to outline three of my favorite products to help prevent and heal existing breakouts in a gentle and effective way. These Kerstin Florian products I recommend are my go-to because of the lightweight and therapeutic nature. Also safe and gentle for the littles!

1. Clarifying Moor Mud Masque-Sweating during play or sports, makeup for dance, not washing their hands and then touching the face are all culprits of spreading bacteria that can lead to congestion. I love this organic mud because it gently exfoliates and deep cleanses. And they will love to get permission to play with mud!

I suggest this product be used in the shower because it should remain moist. After only five minutes they can rinse if off and that’s it!

2.Rehydrating Neroli Water- One issue with breakouts I have seen time and time again is dehydration. The skin at this age may lack hydration (water not oil) and a simple way to help this is to use a floral water. This is a pure and natural product using the extract of the bitter orange blossom to hydrate and oxygenate the skin. The aroma is very uplifting and great for anxiety, perfect for the tween!

Neroli Water can be sprayed throughout the day, at night and whenever the skin needs to be freshened up. It is fun to put in the refrigerator and spray on a warm day, they will love it (and so will mom)!

3.Rehydrating Remineralizing Face Crème– I love this lightweight moisturizer for breakouts because of its protective and re-mineralizing properties. It is safe, recommended for sensitive skin and can be used at night if the tween is feeling a little oily during the day.

All of these products can be purchased on Kerstin Florain’s website, click here for link. Remember to keep it simple, at this age kids should not be focused on long regimens or worrying about their skin. Make it simple and fun and they will respond very positively! Please share this post with any mom you know who may be dealing with tween breakouts and let me know in the comments if there are any products you have used with great results!

Pretty Threading Blowdry-Special Offer!

Threading is an ancient practice of removing facial hair that started in India over 5000 years ago and has been steadily gaining popularity here in the states. The technician uses a piece of thread to uplift and remove hair around eye brows and the lip area. When I started threading my eye brows about ten years ago there were not as many options in the south orange county area so I made the trek to Costa Mesa. Now there are threading salons popping up and I decided I wanted to try it out again.

A friend of mine suggested Pretty Threading in Mission Viejo and I loved my results! I visited their newest location in Rancho Santa Margarita this week, where they also offer Blow dry, make-up applications and Henna!

I love the salon decor and the staff was amazing. When I first sat down for my blowout I was given an Ipad to choose the look I wanted, there were five styles to choose from. The salon uses some of my favorite products such as the Moroccan Oil line and a mineral Make-up line I love called Mirabella. The pricing is so competitive, check out the service menu here.

Pretty Threading is offering 10% off Threading or blow-dry services for my readers, just mention I Heart Skin Care to redeem! I hope you will enjoy your services as much as I did!

Hylunia Wellness Day Spa-Escape to Bali

View albumI am so excited to share my experience with Hylunia Wellness Spa in Costa Mesa which combines natural skin care with Eastern age defying therapies. I am asked frequently which spa I recommend to get a facial treatment in Orange County and after the glowing results I had, this is it! Hylunia Skin Care has been a favorite of mine for over a year when I discovered the Pure Hyaluronic Acid Serum. I was drawn to the Hylunia product line not only because of the purity of the ingredients but also how efficacious the line is and was thrilled to learn of the signature spa opening in Orange County.

I attended a Beauty Blogger Event to experience the spa and receive a facial.  It is an escape to Bali from the products in the retail area and imported furniture to the eastern therapies and rituals they provide. There is no front desk to wait behind, you are free to roam around and check out the authentic Balinese imported goods and skin care. Next in the relaxation room, I had the opportunity to de-stress as I went on a guided meditation journey with the sights and sounds of Bali. I loved having a transition from my hectic day to my actual treatment.

Purple Room where I received my facial.

I received the Hylunia Exclusive Custom Facial, a 75 minute treatment. This is literally a head to toe experience beginning with a foot treatment (yes please!),  back massage and on to the facial treatment itself. It all began with selecting a custom oil, which is intuitively  selected by the guest based on scent preference.  Not surprising to learn I chose an oil used to invigorate and energize! The facial includes a double exfoliation, massage and treatment mask, based on the needs of the individual skin type. Each and every product used in the spa is in the Hylunia Skin Care line which means it is green, holistic, paraben and GMO free. When I saw my skin after I was surprised how toned and hydrated it looked even without make-up and it continued to glow for almost a week.

Hylunia Wellness Spa is offering a special offer for my readers until September 30, 2014. If you purchase a membership you will receive 20% off (cost is normally $50.00) and there are no monthly or annual dues. Use the code BLOGGER2014 to receive this amazing deal. You are able to schedule any one service FREE just by having this membership! (75 min maximum and up to a $130.00 value!) You can also receive 50% off Yoga, 10% off all spa services and retail products, free wellness and cooking seminars and more. It is an amazing offer. Check out the website to read more about the treatments offered, it is incredible.

Guests are able to book treatments and classes online or can call 949-313-776 to book appointments. I am looking forward to trying out some of the eastern rituals such as Stress Relief + FIRE Therapy Massage, Shirodhara Ritual Massage and am taking my three year old to Kids Yoga this weekend. I will be reviewing some of the products I received as well as I am seeing some amazing results with them. Stay tuned!

New Dedorant is Here!

Simply Jess Skin Care has a new product to announce! The Coco-Mango Deodorant is now available for purchase in my Etsy Store, Simply Jess Skin Care. Below I touch upon why I personally switched to a natural deodorant, why I created one myself and what makes my deodorant different.

What is a deodorant vs. an antiperspirant?

Many people know by now why it is important to use a more natural deodorant vs. an antiperspirant and what the difference is. Antiperspirants are designed to decrease sweating through the use of aluminum based ingredients that are absorbed into the skin. The FDA requires that antiperspirants decrease sweat by 20%, so it doesn’t completely stop the process. Of course the higher the aluminum the more the sweat will decrease and the more you are exposed to toxic material under your arms and close to the lymph nodes.

Deodorants on the other hand are designed to help block odor primarily and can help absorb wetness to an extent. Because sweating mixed with the bacteria under your arms causes the odor, they are designed to kill bacteria so the odor problem does not occur. Usually they do not contain aluminum based ingredients, however they may contain alcohol, artificial fragrance, even antibiotics.

Are antiperspirants dangerous?

There is much debate about this question currently. Many people have claimed that the use of antiperspirants contributes to cancer. While there hasn’t been an official government warning against these ingredients and cancer specifically,  there are many studies out there linking the dangers of applying these materials so close to the lymph nodes, especially in regard to breast cancer. Even the FDA admits the aluminum in these products are absorbed into the skin (one of the reasons I stopped using this type of product), and I have never seen a study stating what levels ARE considered safe. And did you know the yellowing/staining effect you see on your clothes are due to the aluminum in the antiperspirant?

My experience

I have always hated to sweat, in fact I refused to get married in the summer months for fear of sweating! In the past I used a strong antiperspirant daily and even kept a secret stash in my car. This particular product I used used Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex at 15.40% as the active ingredient with a bunch of other undesirable ingredients. It would work but then as the day went on I would start to sweat like crazy. I thought it was just how my body worked.

After learning about deodorant and why it was a good idea to ditch the potentially harmful ingredients I decided to throw away my precious stick and try it out. For the first week and a half I was sweating like crazy, I really thought it isn’t going to work! But then my body started to regulate and the weirdest thing happened, I started to sweat less than I ever had. I think that while I was wearing the antiperspirant, my body was not able to expel sweat, which is a natural and crucial function of the body, and that was causing the excess sweating. It is what helps us detoxify. Every time the product wore off I would just sweat like crazy until I would reapply it and then start the unnatural cycle over again. I realized my body does sweat but not as much as before and the more I wore the natural stuff the more I regulated, which was awesome!

I started to use natural deodorants I would buy at the health food store and I found a few I liked. But I realized that even the natural sticks had very unnatural ingredients. That is when I decided this would be my new project, when I say it is natural, it really is.

Simply Jess Coco-Mango Deodorant

My new deodorant helps kill bacteria causing odors and minimizes sweat while letting your body’s natural detoxification process work. It helps absorb excess perspiration thanks to natural ingredients such as Kaolin Clay.

The solid stick easily rolls on with a creamy finish due to luxurious Shea and Mango butters and Coconut Oil. It maintains a beautiful yet subtle fragrance through the use of pure essential oils such as Palmarosa and Lavender, both known for their antibacterial and antiseptic qualities.

I worked together with a chemist who specializes in creating natural body products to create a deodorant that has pure and natural ingredients and actually works. I hand make each stick and use the highest quality ingredients and it is also safe for sensitive skin. If you are used to the antiperspirants, give it a try and give it some time. It took me a week and a half to get used to it. For my friends who already like the natural tubes, let me know how this one compares. You can check out my Etsy Store to find out more details on my Coco-Mango Deodorant here.
