Favorite Green Products!

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day I am talking about three of my favorite green products and I mean literally green!

If you have hyperpigmentation I highly recommend Phyto + by SkinCeuticals. This serum is applied underneath moisturizer daily. This blend of botanical and skin brightening ingredients also contains anti-inflammatory agents helping to calm irritated skin.

I recently bought the Bobbi Brown Sage Metallic Eye Shadow. I love to layer this shade on the very bottom of my eye lid and use it with the Caviar Eye Pencil also by BB. It is a subtle green, with hints of grey shimmer-love it!

I can’t mention “green” products without mentioning ExfoliKate! I have it blogged about it before but if you are new to I ♥ Skin Care, it is one of my go to products for exfoliating and has been for years. Read more about it here Favorite Exfoliators.

Happy St Patty’s and don’t forget to wear green!

MythBusters-Skin Care Edition

From time to time I hear a friend or someone at a spa say something that is just not true in relation to skin care and cosmetics. Here are some of the doozers I have heard:

1. You need to use the same skin care line for all of your products.

Really, why? I am sure the woman behind the counter at the mall would love you to believe this. Use what works for you, if that means using an exfoliation from Dermalogica and your favorite cleanser from SkinCeuticals, do it.

2. When a product turns color and starts to smell-it’s still good.

Well, as much as you want to believe that your $80.00 Vitamin C serum is still good to put on your face even though you have to hold your breath to apply, don’t do it. Products do not last forever, it is important to remember the date you opened it and toss it out when the product turns. Because at this point the product is rancid.

3. The more you exfoliate the better for your skin.

My friends in the beauty industry are most guilty of this, even though they know better! (you know who you are.) Over exfoliation can lead to a break down of healthy skin, sensitivity and even premature aging! Follow the directions of your products and a good rule of thumb for over the counter peels is two to three times a week.

4. You don’t need SPF on cloudy days.

Come on people, we know harmful UV rays can penetrate though a hazy sky, apply it every day no matter what.

5. Natural Products are the best.

Next time your friend says she only uses “natural products” on her skin ask her what the definition of that is. Just because a product says “natural” doesn’t mean it is. There is no legal consequence for putting natural on a label when it is not because there is no legal definition. I have seen a natural line include fragrance and other items most would not consider natural so read your labels and make your own choices. As for making your own products at home, be careful. You don’t want to be smearing a bunch of bacteria and oxidized food from your fridge on your face now do you?

Do your own research and just remember not everything on the web is accurate when it comes to cosmetics or anything else for that matter. Always consider your source and what their interests are. If you have heard something skin care related you are a little iffy about please let me know!

Multivitamin Thermafoliant-A love letter

Dear Dermalogica,

Thank you for creating the Age Smart Multivitamin Thermafoliant. After one application and two quick minutes, my skin looked and felt amazing. Perfectly soft yet not stripped of hydration. This combination therapy of physical and chemical exfoliation is the perfect blend to achieve that glow I was desperately in need of. Especially with the stress of the holidays. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Sincerely (or should I say Love?),

I heart skin care

P.S. Just found out my husband has been using my MT…better stock up before its all gone!

FAQ-Skin care edition

Over the years in the treatment room and in trainings I have been asked questions that seem to repeatedly come up. Here they are with my answers/opinions below:

Q. Should I put on my skin care products on dry or wet skin?

A. Always moist skin. If by the time you are applying product when your skin is dry just spray with a toner of your choice. This will help your products penetrate further making them more effective.

Q. In what order do I apply my products?

A. Cleanse, tone, treat/serum, eye cream, moisturize, SPF (A.M.) If using an exfoliation or mask apply after toning the skin and use an exfoliation before a mask.

Q. How to apply eye cream.

A. iCare

Q. Should I wash my face in the AM if I washed it the night before?

A. Yes. Oils from the hair or on your pillow should be removed. If you are not oily you can do a quick tone with a hydrating toner if you do not want to over-wash and then apply daily products.

Q. Should I wear sun protection if I am not laying out in the sun?

A. Sun protection should be applied daily even if you are not going to the beach. We get sun more than we realize (walking to into buildings at work and driving in the car) safer to be protected.

Q. When is the best time to exfoliate?

A. Best time is at night so you will not be immediately exposed to the sun. Be diligent about using sun protection the following morning.

Q. What are the most important things to do to prevent dehydration on a plane?

A. Drink tons of water, limit alcohol (but you are not taking mine away) and wear an extra hydrating serum/moisturizer. Be sure to wear SPF, you are much closer to the sun!

Q. Some tips to prevent acne on your forehead and chin.

A. Pull hair back at night, wash pillowcases regularly, clean phones (especially cell phones and work phones-the cleaning crew doesn’t!) and stop touching your face!

Q. How MUCH product should I use?

A. Click here

Q. How often to get a facial?

A. Best case scenario 4-6 weeks. This is hard for most people so maintain with at home treatments.

Q. What is the best device I can use for my skin?

A. It all starts with a properly cleansed skin. Using a Clairsonic brush will change your skin…for the better of course!

That is all for now, I will update this as I think of more or leave a comment asking your own skin care questions!

Happy Halloween!

It’s one of my favorite holiday’s and everyone is in the spirit at my house (My Devil Dog is no exception). For a last minute costume idea, why not go as a Spa Queen? You can dress up in a robe in slippers, pull hair back with a band and apply a skin care mask. Make sure not to choose one that is made for acne or oily skin types as it will be too drying to keep on for an extended period of time.

You can always stay in and get into the spirit by exfoliating with a product with pumpkin enzymes like Kate Somervilles Exfolikate or Sircuits Pumpkin Enzyme Peel.

Trick or Treat!

Turkish Bath

After I graduated from college I took a month holiday to celebrate in Greece and Turkey. While in Istanbul, we were lucky enough to visit a traditional Turkish Bath House or Hammam and it was experience I will never forget! The history of bath houses are so rich and interesting (learn more here), and if you travel to Turkey it is a must.

The beginning of the treatment begins with elevating your body temperature through alternating the sauna and steam room a few times. The next “step” is a plunge in cold water-where every few minutes we could hear a splash followed by sounds of a screeching woman! The point of this process is to strengthen your immune system and invigorate your body. After the rather shocking plunge, I was lead to a warmed marble table while I rested and waited for my scrub master/masseuse to bring me to the next station I like to call the scrub down table. I had never been so vigorously cleaned  (this was prior to my visit to the Olympic Spa in KoreaTown LA-more on this later) and although not a soothing body scrub as I was used to in the West, my skin felt amazingly smooth.

After the scrub I put on a robe and we drank tea. This was not optional. People do not rush out of the spa there as they do here, in fact, it is considered part of the treatment to continue to relax. Otherwise the point of the process would be lost. Although the experience on the whole was rather un “spa” like according to our standards, I rarely leave as relaxed and completely re-charged here as I did that day. In Turkey this is a ritual that is experienced by many of their people on a weekly basis, because they know it is a crucial restorative practice, and also because it is tradition. Also you can’t beat the price, cheap! Here is a link if happen to be in Turkey:

Turkish Hammams

If not, don’t worry, this worldly art has become quite popular recently and there are many Hammams popping up. Expect less traditional and more expensive but usually an absolute treat.

Antioxidant Skin Care

Recently I was asked to shed some light on incorporating antioxidant skin care products into a home care regimen. It’s a great question and and even better idea. Using antioxidant rich products *effective products* is important for helping to even out skin tone, minimizing pigmentation and prevention. To prevent further damage you also want to do the following:

Exfoliate!

Wear Sun Protection (religiously)

Use Antioxidants (and eat them!)

Get Facial Treatments

So back to the antioxidants, there are many used in the industry. Vitamin C is a standard and it’s very effective. One of my favorite products uses C but also some other potent ingredients that are super effective when combined.

Phloretin CF by SkinCeuticals is the product I would always recommend to my clients in search of a result driven product that offers prevention along with correction. It’s best used during the day time for extra protection against the sun and free radical damage.

Here are the benefits as listed on SkinCeuticals website:

  • Prevents premature signs of aging and corrects existing photodamage
  • Divides and conquers the range of reactive oxygen species (ROS) throughout the skin
  • Prevents cell mutation by shielding skin’s DNA
  • Accelerates cell turnover
  • Boosts skin’s support structure
  • Inhibits UV-induced discolorations

If you really want to see a difference in the hyperpigmentation, I love to couple with Phyto +. Here are the benefits as listed on SkinCeuticals website:

  • Contains kojic acid and arbutin to help reduce hyperpigmentation
  • Active ingredients work synergistically to lighten the appearance of skin
  • Natural alternative to the chemical skin lightener hydroquinone—less likely to cause irritation
  • Contains anti-inflammatory cucumber and anti-bacterial thyme to soothe and calm irritated skin
  • Helps maintain results following invasive cosmetic procedures
  • Ideal for all skin types

Hope that helps April, this ones for you. ♥

Don’t ignore it!

The neck and décolleté (chest area) are often ignored when it comes to an at-home regimen. In fact, I have seen certain spa/skin care facilities only treat the face as well. We expose our neck and décolleté to the same elements we expose our facial skin to so make sure and do the following:

Cleanse. If you have a Clarisonic brush I suggest adding time for your neck and chest. Check out the link below for Clarisonic info:

http://iheartskincare.net/2010/05/29/super-sonic/

Exfoliate and Treat. Treat the skin on your neck and décolleté as you would your face. Pull down each product when you treat.

Sun Protection. Have you ever seen a two-tone face and neck? Yep I bet you have, don’t let this happen to you. Make sure you protect both equally.
