The Fast Fix! (Skin Care Edition)

About 10 years ago everyone at my work was dieting with the lemonade diet and losing weight. I wanted to lose five pounds so I was in! By day two I was getting dizzy and my dogs food smelled really good. I decided to stop, gained the two pounds of water weight back plus more and permanently slowed my metabolism. What a win!

I recently was thinking of this story because it can be the same with our skin, we want the fast fix without first trying the basic things we should be doing. Instead of fasting with lemon salt water I should have started with a healthy diet and exercise. I have a lot of people asking me about expensive and sometimes invasive procedures to help their skins appearance. So today I am going back to the basics with three easy steps to get your skin game going strong. Even if you decide to go forward with more advanced procedures you will see even better results if you are doing these things first. Or you may find you see such an improvement you stick with these tips and save yourself some $$$ and recovery time!

Exfoliate!

This is the most effective way to help shed those dead skin cells sitting on the surface of the skin making it hard to get your products to penetrate in. Fine lines and wrinkles look more defined when you are not regularly exfoliating and skin has less of a glow. I say start here and be consistent! I keep one in the shower so I can remember to regularly exfoliate. I can see a difference when I do. And most products only take a few minutes so it won’t be a challenge to fit this step in.

Hydrate!

Hydration in the skin is the best way to plump out fine lines and give your skin a beautiful glow. But many people I talk to are not using a serum or a hydrator under their moisturizer (or even using an effective moisturizer). After I use my Simply Jess toner I apply my serum and then my moisturizer. This helps to ensure I have the hydration I need. And of course hydrate internally not just topically. Drinking enough water makes a huge difference in the skin. Especially if you are consuming dehydrating drinks such as coffee or alcohol, (Me? Never!).  Add something like lemon, electrolytes or fruit to jazz up your water so that it doesn’t feel so boring to drink.

Sleep

I know how easy it is to dismiss this one. I can certainly tell a difference in my skin when I have actually had a good nights sleep. It seems like the norm to be sleep deprived and I have finally started to take this seriously. During the night our skin is rejuvenating (along with our brain and everything else in the body), so it is crucial to try to get some solid sleep. After my camping trip when I slept a good 30 minutes one night, my skin definitely was not looking its best. I know for the moms who are reading this it can seem difficult to get all the sleep we need but its so important to help us feel and look better. They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing!

LOVE the Sea!

For us, this summer has been filled with many beach filled days. There is nothing more uplifting and exhilarating to me as taking a dip in the ocean water. There is research on how the ocean has positive effects on our immune system, healing benefits for certain skin conditions and even just walking barefoot on the sand can be beneficial. An amazing marine coral which is harvested in the Caribbean. It is healing and amazing for super sensitive skin types. I also love this ingredient for any one who has been in the sun, it is a powerful anti-inflammatory gem!

Lili Mineni-Naturally Advanced Skin Care

The last few weeks I have had people asking me about my skin and commenting on how it is glowing. My secret? I had a visit with my friend and skin care expert Lili! I love her philosophy which is right in line with mine. A holistic approach to skincare that is advanced in its results. I had the most wonderful facial and the results have continued well after my treatment a few weeks ago.

After cleansing Lili exfoliated in conjunction with the Ultrasonic machine which I love.  After extractions she used micro-current and Lightstim light therapy.

The micro-current tightens and tones the facial muscles as well as stimulating collagen and elastin while softening fine lines. The micro-current machine Lili uses in her studio is the one I have seen the best results with.

I have been a huge fan of light therapy particularly the “red light” because of the amazing results, no downtime or damage to the skin and science behind it. For plumping, evening out the skin tone and as an overall anti-aging treatment this can not be beat! Not all red light treatments are the same and I have not seen as great of results with others but I love the LightStim.

Need a Solution for Melasma? 4 Tips to help!

 

Melasma is a skin condition I have been asked a lot about lately. Usually problematic in the face, melasma is an overproduction of pigment making the skin appear darker in certain areas. It is a skin condition that is typically related to hormones and can be worsened by sun light, skin inflammation/acne or certain types of medication.

Some of the women I talk to have seen an increase or experience melasma for the first time after having kids. One way to avoid it from getting worse is to avoid excessive sun exposure. I know personally after having kids I am in the sun much more than before. Between pool days, going to the park and other outside activities it is hard to avoid. Here are some helpful hints to help tackle melasma.

1. Limit Sun Exposure – If you have to be in the sun, make sure to cover your face. I try and wear a hat as much as possible when I am out with the kids. Even the best sun protection has its limitations so try and cover up. This is the first and most important tip because if you start to treat the skin without covering up it will not help and could even make it worse. I think getting out in the sun is healthy and Vitamin D is crucial for our health but at least limit your face if working on this problem.

2. Look at Medications- Some of the birth control out there among other prescription medication can lead to an increase in pigmentation, so ask your doctor.

3. Topical Treatment Options– I am not a fan of harsh lightening creams, partially because they are not exactly great for the skin but also because if you aggravate the cells in the skin responsible for melanin production while using those products, the problem will come back even worse.

Regular exfoliation and brightening/lightening serums do a great job of managing pigmentation in the skin. I love Brilliance from Sircuit Cosmecuticals for its brightening agents. 4. Laser – If skin care treatments are in your budget I would recommend going to a medical spa or dermatologists office for a consultation. Some of the lasers out there do wonders, make sure you are going to a reputable place where the technician is experienced. Remember to be vigilant about covering up during these treatments. The summer months are not ideal for these types of treatments, although in Southern California I think Summer is the only season we have left.

Fall Skin Care Tips!

October is here! Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. The holidays, comfort foods and excuse to bring out my scarves. I am patiently waiting because apparently Southern California has not got the memo that summer is over. When the weather does begin to change, it is helpful to make some adjustments to our skin care routine. Below are a few helpful hits to transition your summer skin care to fall ready.

1. Treat Summer Sun Damage.

Post summer is a great time to begin exfoliating regularly again and treating yourself to a great facial treatment. If you spent a lot of time outdoors this summer try adding a antioxidant serum to help with sun damage.

Top Three Tips for Kick Butt Skin

 

My top three tips for healthier looking skin are pretty much the same for any skin type. If you have been neglecting your skin and it shows, try these simple steps and see if it helps!

1. Exfoliate– So are you exfoliating at home on a regular basis? I think this is an important step so many clients I talk to are missing! Whether your concern is dehydrated/ dull skin or congestion and oiliness, exfoliating will help. Getting rid of the top layer of skin will help bring healthy cells to the skins surface. Don’t get crazy and over exfoliate to make up for lost time, that will do more damage than good. 2. Hydrate- A few days of not drinking enough water, having too much caffeine or alcohol or not using hydrating skin care can show up instantly in the skin. When the skin is dehydrated every fine line is amplified and looks more aged. That is why people with oilier skin types tend to have less fine lines than us ‘dry as the desert’ skin types. Along with internal hydration I love using a topical serum to help hydrate and plump up the skin, makes a beautiful difference under make-up too.

3. Sleep- Sleep is crucial for absolutely everything, it is when we recharge our brains, when human growth hormone is released and when are cells are regenerating. I cringe as I type this one, it has not been a good year of sleep for me. I am more clumsy, I am constantly dropping things and my memory has not been good. It totally shows in my skin as well, you can tell I just look tired. A good nights sleep makes a world of difference in our skin and the way we feel so if you can, get more sleep. I know it is hard, trust me, but it helps tremendously.

Help! My Tween is Breaking Out!

Rehydrating Neroli Water

Lately I am getting a ton of questions regarding the tween age child and breakouts. I am going to outline three of my favorite products to help prevent and heal existing breakouts in a gentle and effective way. These Kerstin Florian products I recommend are my go-to because of the lightweight and therapeutic nature. Also safe and gentle for the littles!

1. Clarifying Moor Mud Masque-Sweating during play or sports, makeup for dance, not washing their hands and then touching the face are all culprits of spreading bacteria that can lead to congestion. I love this organic mud because it gently exfoliates and deep cleanses. And they will love to get permission to play with mud!

I suggest this product be used in the shower because it should remain moist. After only five minutes they can rinse if off and that’s it!

2.Rehydrating Neroli Water- One issue with breakouts I have seen time and time again is dehydration. The skin at this age may lack hydration (water not oil) and a simple way to help this is to use a floral water. This is a pure and natural product using the extract of the bitter orange blossom to hydrate and oxygenate the skin. The aroma is very uplifting and great for anxiety, perfect for the tween!

Neroli Water can be sprayed throughout the day, at night and whenever the skin needs to be freshened up. It is fun to put in the refrigerator and spray on a warm day, they will love it (and so will mom)!

3.Rehydrating Remineralizing Face Crème– I love this lightweight moisturizer for breakouts because of its protective and re-mineralizing properties. It is safe, recommended for sensitive skin and can be used at night if the tween is feeling a little oily during the day.
