Oysters-Super Skin Food!

One of my passions in life other than skin care, is food. I love to cook and of course I love to eat! As I educate myself more and more about the best foods to eat and feed my family, I am also learning which foods can be beneficial for your skin. Taking this inside-out approach to skin care when combined with the best topical products ensures the best results. We have talked about the benefits of Lycopene in tomatoes and now we will discuss another ‘super skin’ food.

Oysters have high amounts of the mineral zinc (as well as Calcium and various vitamins) which supports elastin and collagen production in the skins’ dermis. Helping to keep the skin looking “plump” and smooth.  My favorite way to eat them is raw on the half shell with a glass of bubbly in hand. Taking care of my skin is hard work, but I am dedicated.

More ‘super skin’ foods to come!

H2woo!

I have several friends and family members who are pregnant right now. It got me thinking of what I used to drink when I was pregnant (and secretly wanting wine). I loved to drink sparkling water in a wine glass and I would add natural flavors such as fresh mint, lemon and cucumbers. It is fun to drink something “pretty” so I got the idea to freeze fruit in ice cube trays and put it in the water. Here is what I do:

Sprinkle organic mixed berries into an ice cube tray

Fill with water and freeze

This idea is super simple and it lightly flavors the water.  Of course this is not just for pregnant people, drinking water all day long can get boring so this is a way to spruce it up. Hydration is key for beautiful looking skin and overall health. Don’t forget you need to drink extra water for every cup of coffee and soda you drink.  Sugary soda drinks are out, spa-like water is in! After all, water is what SPA is all about!

My Spa Water

I recently had the privilege of interviewing Pam Wenzel, author and creator of http://myspawater.com/ about the importance of water as it relates to our skin and overall health. She explains how essential proper hydration is and how to make drinking water seem like a day at the spa!

I ♥ SC: The benefits of drinking enough water seem endless, can you explain
some of the most important reasons we need to stay hydrated?

PAM: Yes Jessica you are correct, they really are endless! But speaking from
a Health perspective (as apposed to beauty), I think the most important reason
to stay hydrated is to lower our risk of disease. One of the MANY jobs of water
is to flush toxins that build up in the body that cause disease. Being an 18
year breast cancer survivor, I do follow and read many reports on this subject.
For example, I recently reviewed a study suggesting that Drinking 5 glasses of
water daily could decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by
79%, and developing bladder cancer by 50%. I think this is absolutely amazing!
More research is being done and of course much debate will follow. One thing
that resonated with me about this study though is that I had developed breast
cancer at an early age (27) and even though I did try to eat right and exercise
in my 20’s I very seldom drank water.

I ♥ SC: Do you believe there is a correlation to staying hydrated and the look
and feel of our skin?

PAM: Absolutely there is! I believe that water is the best kept beauty secret
of all time! Water naturally hydrates the body inside and out. Proper hydration
is the key to beautiful glowing skin as it helps keep skin from drying out, thus
preventing wrinkles and that’s what we are all striving toward! Hydrating your body facilitates cell growth and regeneration, elimination of wastes, and sloughing away of dead skin cells improving your skin tone!

I ♥ SC: Why is it important to drink water after a spa treatment?

PAM: Aside from being extremely refreshing after a hard day at the spa, water
can actually minimize muscle pain (muscles are composed of 70% water) and
soreness in the days following a massage.
A massage can also be dehydrating and it’s always important to replenish water
and even electrolytes that can be lost during treatments. But most importantly,
water helps relieve stress and relaxes the body making for a more enjoyable spa
experience!

I ♥ SC: I know people who don’t drink enough water because they feel its too
“boring”. Can you share any recipes that may entice our readers to drink
more water?

PAM:Yes it is actually quite boring! Would absolutely love to share. Here is
one of my favorites ~ Raspberry Mist ~ which comes from the Hyatt Tamaya New
Mexico (page 5 of our Spa Water Book).

This Spa Water is not only refreshing but absolutely beautiful! In addition to
their Excellent flavor, raspberries are full of strong antioxidants and
possess anticancer properties. Limes, known as an immune system boosting fruit,
add a vitamin packed zest!

Raspberry Mist from Hyatt Tamaya:

2 Cartons of raspberries
3 Limes thinly sliced
Ice and water

Method: Layer your beverage pitcher with lime slices and raspberries. Add ice.
Repeat until the server is full. Pour water over the ice and fruit.

This recipe can also be found on our blog

Outer Beauty, Inner Health

In the beauty industry we are finally starting to realize what an impact healthy living can make on our outer appearance. This is not a new concept for Kerstin Florian International. I had the pleasure of interviewing Charlene Florian, Vice President of Corporate Creative Development, and daughter of Kerstin Florian about the company philosophy, her favorite products and amazing new treatments they offer:

Tell us a little about Kerstin Florian and the company history.
Kerstin Florian is a Swedish born esthetician who has a passion for skincare and a unique ability to make beautiful natural products that produce results.  She began her career as a model in Italy where everything was about outer beauty.  There she began her journey to understand true beauty, that everyone is beautiful and has the ability to find their true beauty and vitality through health, well-being and proper skincare.  After becoming an esthetician and working on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, she opened a day spa in Laguna Beach, California.  It expanded three times until she had 22 employees.  She was hired by many of the finest hotels to develop their spa concept and menu.  Now she has a complete range of 100 products, lives in Sweden six months out of the year and works with many of the worlds most exclusive spas including the Dorchester in London, the Dolder Grand in Zurich, Fairmont Willow Stream Spas worldwide and the newly launched Hilton Eforea Spas worldwide.

What is Kerstin Florian’s philosophy on healthy skin and ways to incorporate into every day life?
Our philosophy is Outer Beauty Inner Health.  We believe that total well being is comprised of Proper Nutrition (Lots of vegetables, superfoods, Pure Water and tonic herbs (teas and green smoothies are a great way to get these everyday) in the diet), Regular Exercise, a positive attitude as well as Care of the Face and Body (applying antioxidants and nourishing ingredients topically).  Our skin is a reflection of our daily lifestyle.

What are some of your favorite KFI spa treatments and products?
My favorite facial treatment is with our new K-Lift , Age-Management System.  The results are incredible.  It uses Kinetic energies in three phases:
K-Light: Photobiostimulation and Impulse Microcurrents used simultaneously
K-Firm: Impulse MicroCurrent for Tightening Facial Contours
K-Fusion: Transdermal Delivery for deeper penetration of topical ingredients
Results:

  • Improves collagen synthesis
  • Improves cell membrane permeability allowing better metabolite and enzymatic exchanges
  • Increases level of lymphocyte activity which allows better waste elimination (detoxification)
  • Restores dermal density
  • Energizes Mitochondria (Mitochondria is the power center of the cell. Its main    function is to generate energy
  • Targets “Anti-gravity” muscle groups and tones facial muscles.
  • Triggers DNA regeneration and cell repair

My favorite products include:  Rehydrating Neroli Cleansing Milk, Correcting Intensive Renewal glycolic 15, Multi-Vitamin Day Crème SPF 30, Caviar Age Defense Serum, Brightening Eye Crème, FuB Balm.

I would like to thank Charlene for taking the time to talk to me and share her philosophies and knowledge with us! This a woman who truly practices what she preaches about living a healthy lifestyle and it shows. Visit Kerstin on her website to learn more about the products and find a spa near you. Your mind and body will thank you.

Antioxidant Skin Care

Recently I was asked to shed some light on incorporating antioxidant skin care products into a home care regimen. It’s a great question and and even better idea. Using antioxidant rich products *effective products* is important for helping to even out skin tone, minimizing pigmentation and prevention. To prevent further damage you also want to do the following:

Exfoliate!

Wear Sun Protection (religiously)

Use Antioxidants (and eat them!)

Get Facial Treatments

So back to the antioxidants, there are many used in the industry. Vitamin C is a standard and it’s very effective. One of my favorite products uses C but also some other potent ingredients that are super effective when combined.

Phloretin CF by SkinCeuticals is the product I would always recommend to my clients in search of a result driven product that offers prevention along with correction. It’s best used during the day time for extra protection against the sun and free radical damage.

Here are the benefits as listed on SkinCeuticals website:

  • Prevents premature signs of aging and corrects existing photodamage
  • Divides and conquers the range of reactive oxygen species (ROS) throughout the skin
  • Prevents cell mutation by shielding skin’s DNA
  • Accelerates cell turnover
  • Boosts skin’s support structure
  • Inhibits UV-induced discolorations

If you really want to see a difference in the hyperpigmentation, I love to couple with Phyto +. Here are the benefits as listed on SkinCeuticals website:

  • Contains kojic acid and arbutin to help reduce hyperpigmentation
  • Active ingredients work synergistically to lighten the appearance of skin
  • Natural alternative to the chemical skin lightener hydroquinone—less likely to cause irritation
  • Contains anti-inflammatory cucumber and anti-bacterial thyme to soothe and calm irritated skin
  • Helps maintain results following invasive cosmetic procedures
  • Ideal for all skin types

Hope that helps April, this ones for you. ♥

Many of you have heard of the carotenoid Lycopene, which is a buzz word in not only the medical community but also the skin care world. The benefits of this super antioxidant is miles long and as important as helping to minimize the risk of certain types of cancer.

The exciting skin care news is that we can help protect ourselves from the dangerous UV rays by eating lycopene rich foods. According to a study by the British Society for Investigative Dermatology subjects who had higher levels of Lycopene in their diet, (tomato paste was the source) had 33 % more protection against sun burn and damage.

Here is a great website listing food sources and levels of lycopene in each: http://www.leffingwell.com/lycopene.htm

Most of the research I have read claims the highest amounts can be found in tomatoes, especially concentrated forms (tomato paste) and from cooked rather than raw tomatoes.  Here is a recipe I make for my husband and I often to get my lycopene fix-hope you enjoy!

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Put 1 pint organic cherry or grape tomatoes in oven safe dish. Drizzle 1 tbls Olive Oil, pinch of salt and pepper and combine.  Roast for 30 minutes.

In a small sauce pan add a few drizzles of olive oil and half a yellow onion chopped and let cook over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add a few cloves chopped garlic for one minute. Add one can of tomato sauce, 1 tbls tomato paste, one pinch of each: red pepper flakes/salt/pepper/thyme (use fresh if you have it) stir and let simmer.

Meanwhile add 1 lb. whole wheat penne pasta to salted boiling water, cook according to directions. Reserve one cup of pasta water. Drain pasta and put back in pot.

Add the roasted tomatoes, the tomato sauce and the pasta water to the pot with pasta. Add lots of fresh basil and Parmesan cheese. Try not to have seconds.

I ♥ Jillian Michaels

I heart skincare is about more than the latest lip balm. I truly believe that in order to have beautiful skin you have to have feed your body proper nutrients, get enough sleep and exercise. I do everything in my power to live by this philosophy.

No one in the world, and I mean no one has taught me more than Jillian Michaels in regards to health, fitness and nutrition. I discovered her one day on a local LA radio station, at the time I had never heard of her popular TV show the Biggest Loser. I listened to every radio show where she taught us all about what to eat like organic foods, how to lose weight and so much more. Once that radio show ended (feeling horribly sad and abandoned!) I began to watch the Biggest Loser to get my Jillian fix but it did not stop there.

Since my introduction to her I have bought all of her books (currently listening to Unlimited on my iPod) use her fitness DVD’s (perfect for baby’s nap time which has been the only time I can work out) and faithfully listen to her new podcast on my daily walks (you can find these free podcasts on iTunes http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-jillian-michaels-show/id418368811 ). Do yourself a favor and subscribe to this show, you will be amazed how much you will learn and she is quite entertaining!

This woman is a treasure. If you are at all interested in your health and wellness you will love the tools that Jillian has out there. I feel such gratitude for her and all she has taught me personally. At the end of the day the way we look, the way we feel, how we take care of ourselves-it’s all related. Our best tool is to educate ourselves to know and do better, and it doesn’t hurt to have someone as  inspiring as Jillian out there to guide us along.

3 Supplements for Skin Health

I have been pretty inconsistent with my vitamin and supplement intake over the years. Right now I am definitely working on optimizing my health and vitamins have come back into the picture. Of course price always comes into play for me and many people out there so you have to prioritize for your individual needs.

As far as skin goes, there are a few I love and personally take on a daily basis:

Omega 3/Fish Oils– The benefits of this supplement range from skin to brain function to improved mood. It is endless. This is one supplement that you should really buy a good quality capsule to see a difference. As far as skin goes, it is one of the best anti-agers helping with wrinkles and dryness.

Food Sources: Fish, flaxseed, walnuts

Vitamin D– Has been known to help with skin disorders such as acne, Rosacea and eczema. Getting enough Vitamin D (3) is hard to do just from the sun with the dangers of skin cancer these days. It is a great idea to take a supplement to ensure you receive what you need (also great for heart and brain health!).

Food Sources: Milk, cheese, fatty fish

Probiotics-Be careful if you are getting your probiotics in your yogurt. It should be organic otherwise you will be ingesting antibiotics, defeating the point. Ingesting these probiotics can help with aging skin and even acne. Not to mention all of the other benefits of taking them for overall health and immunity protection.

Food Sources: Yogurt, miso, tempeh

Our goal should be to eat as many healthy foods that contain these vitamins in our daily diet. I have added below each supplement, food sources to get the desired vitamin. However, consuming the recommended levels of each vitamin can be impossible at times which is why supplementing is such a great tool.
