Oysters-Super Skin Food!

One of my passions in life other than skin care, is food. I love to cook and of course I love to eat! As I educate myself more and more about the best foods to eat and feed my family, I am also learning which foods can be beneficial for your skin. Taking this inside-out approach to skin care when combined with the best topical products ensures the best results. We have talked about the benefits of Lycopene in tomatoes and now we will discuss another ‘super skin’ food.

Oysters have high amounts of the mineral zinc (as well as Calcium and various vitamins) which supports elastin and collagen production in the skins’ dermis. Helping to keep the skin looking “plump” and smooth.  My favorite way to eat them is raw on the half shell with a glass of bubbly in hand. Taking care of my skin is hard work, but I am dedicated.

H2woo!

I have several friends and family members who are pregnant right now. It got me thinking of what I used to drink when I was pregnant (and secretly wanting wine). I loved to drink sparkling water in a wine glass and I would add natural flavors such as fresh mint, lemon and cucumbers. It is fun to drink something “pretty” so I got the idea to freeze fruit in ice cube trays and put it in the water. Here is what I do:

Sprinkle organic mixed berries into an ice cube tray

Fill with water and freeze

This idea is super simple and it lightly flavors the water.  Of course this is not just for pregnant people, drinking water all day long can get boring so this is a way to spruce it up. Hydration is key for beautiful looking skin and overall health. Don’t forget you need to drink extra water for every cup of coffee and soda you drink.  Sugary soda drinks are out, spa-like water is in! After all, water is what SPA is all about!

ORGANIC COFFEE BEAN CAFFEINE EYE CREAM

The eyes are the window of the soul.

Being sleep deprived for a long period of time can totally wreak havoc on your skin. Obviously I can speak from experience here after having a baby almost a year ago. The skin is a reflection of how we feel on the inside so if your body is tired most likely the look of your skin will be compromised as well.

One area I am often asked about is the eye area. It is the most delicate area of the face and shows the fine lines, puffiness and dryness the most. Caffeine is excellent for stimulating this area and making it look refreshed again much like your morning cup of Joe helps with your energy levels. Around the eye area coffee extract or caffeine in other forms can help with puffiness and dark circles (non-genetic dark circles).

One of my favorite eye creams with Coffee and Green tea extract is the 100% Pure Organic Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream. It is moisturizing but not too heavy, helps with inflammation and fine lines. Click on the website info to learn more.

Neutrogena Men® Triple Protect Face Lotion SPF 20

Most of the male clientele I have treated are in the market for a simple routine. Products that have multiple functions in one tube, always a bonus. I like this Neutrogena product for that very reason. Great for an after shave, moisturizer and SPF. Has a subtle masculine fragrance and is quite lightweight. Although it does hydrate even dry skin living in a dessert climate…you know who you are. Thanks for the tip.

Can’t beat the price either at $6.99 on Neutrogena.com or at your local drugstore.

Evian Mineral Spray

I know I have spoken about this Evian Spray before and you know how crazy I am about toners. This was my “go-to” spray toner this summer during the ridiculous heat, which by the way isn’t going away. I really liked to drench my skin whenever possible, especially right after my shower and before I apply skin care treatment products. It also can be used right on top of your make-up. The packaging is recyclable and the sprayer does not harm the environment.

At Skin Store.com they have a variety of sizes so you can bring one with you on a plane and keep one in your purse. Is it Fall yet?!

Check yourself-Skin Cancer Prevention

Have you been to a Dermatologist this year? Well, maybe its time you made an appointment. More than 90 percent of dermatologic surgeons have seen at least one patient in the past year with cancer that was overlooked or misdiagnosed by a non-dermatologist, finds a survey of by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery.

There is mixed feelings about the frequency of exams but after what I have read the safest bet is going with an annual screening. Especially if you are considered high risk spending time in the sun now and in the past.

Cancer.org has great information and facts regarding skin cancer and how to prevent it.

ultra sensitive faceblock spf25

Summer is almost over, but the heat? Not so much. I just purchased one of my favorite SPF’s ultra sensitive faceblock spf25 by Dermalogica and I have fallen in love all over again. This oldie but goodie was a product I used to recommend to my clients all of the time and I love it for my skin as well. It is great for sensitivity but anyone can use it. I like to use it as my “foundation” sometimes because it’s tinted and has a beautiful shade (and that is one less step for me on a busy morning!).

5 Minute Make-up!

After having my baby, I have perfected the art of getting my make-up done in exactly 5 minutes. I tell you it is possible. Below are my steps for my 5 minute routine, granted I am not ready to get my picture taken but I don’t scare myself every time I walk past a mirror either. The 5 minutes begins after you have cleansed your skin and applied your daily skin care. Start your timers:

1. Bronzer: If I don’t have time to put on foundation/powder I lightly dust my face and neck all over with a great bronzer.

2. Blush: On the cheek bones.

3. Eye Brows: Take the minute to powder and define your eye brows, they frame your face so it makes a huge difference.

4. Eye Liner: Just line underneath your eye on the lash.

5. Curl Lashes and Apply Mascara: A must.

6. Gloss it up: Lips are crucial, keep your favorite lip gloss in your pocket to re-apply throughout the day. My favorite is Chanel Glossimer.

Voilà, you are ready to go!

Turkish Bath

After I graduated from college I took a month holiday to celebrate in Greece and Turkey. While in Istanbul, we were lucky enough to visit a traditional Turkish Bath House or Hammam and it was experience I will never forget! The history of bath houses are so rich and interesting (learn more here), and if you travel to Turkey it is a must.

The beginning of the treatment begins with elevating your body temperature through alternating the sauna and steam room a few times. The next “step” is a plunge in cold water-where every few minutes we could hear a splash followed by sounds of a screeching woman! The point of this process is to strengthen your immune system and invigorate your body. After the rather shocking plunge, I was lead to a warmed marble table while I rested and waited for my scrub master/masseuse to bring me to the next station I like to call the scrub down table. I had never been so vigorously cleaned  (this was prior to my visit to the Olympic Spa in KoreaTown LA-more on this later) and although not a soothing body scrub as I was used to in the West, my skin felt amazingly smooth.

After the scrub I put on a robe and we drank tea. This was not optional. People do not rush out of the spa there as they do here, in fact, it is considered part of the treatment to continue to relax. Otherwise the point of the process would be lost. Although the experience on the whole was rather un “spa” like according to our standards, I rarely leave as relaxed and completely re-charged here as I did that day. In Turkey this is a ritual that is experienced by many of their people on a weekly basis, because they know it is a crucial restorative practice, and also because it is tradition. Also you can’t beat the price, cheap! Here is a link if happen to be in Turkey:

Turkish Hammams

If not, don’t worry, this worldly art has become quite popular recently and there are many Hammams popping up. Expect less traditional and more expensive but usually an absolute treat.
