I recently had the privilege of interviewing Pam Wenzel, author and creator of http://myspawater.com/ about the importance of water as it relates to our skin and overall health. She explains how essential proper hydration is and how to make drinking water seem like a day at the spa!
I ♥ SC: The benefits of drinking enough water seem endless, can you explain
some of the most important reasons we need to stay hydrated?
PAM: Yes Jessica you are correct, they really are endless! But speaking from
a Health perspective (as apposed to beauty), I think the most important reason
to stay hydrated is to lower our risk of disease. One of the MANY jobs of water
is to flush toxins that build up in the body that cause disease. Being an 18
year breast cancer survivor, I do follow and read many reports on this subject.
For example, I recently reviewed a study suggesting that Drinking 5 glasses of
water daily could decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by
79%, and developing bladder cancer by 50%. I think this is absolutely amazing!
More research is being done and of course much debate will follow. One thing
that resonated with me about this study though is that I had developed breast
cancer at an early age (27) and even though I did try to eat right and exercise
in my 20’s I very seldom drank water.
I ♥ SC: Do you believe there is a correlation to staying hydrated and the look
and feel of our skin?
PAM: Absolutely there is! I believe that water is the best kept beauty secret
of all time! Water naturally hydrates the body inside and out. Proper hydration
is the key to beautiful glowing skin as it helps keep skin from drying out, thus
preventing wrinkles and that’s what we are all striving toward! Hydrating your body facilitates cell growth and regeneration, elimination of wastes, and sloughing away of dead skin cells improving your skin tone!
I ♥ SC: Why is it important to drink water after a spa treatment?
PAM: Aside from being extremely refreshing after a hard day at the spa, water
can actually minimize muscle pain (muscles are composed of 70% water) and
soreness in the days following a massage.
A massage can also be dehydrating and it’s always important to replenish water
and even electrolytes that can be lost during treatments. But most importantly,
water helps relieve stress and relaxes the body making for a more enjoyable spa
I ♥ SC: I know people who don’t drink enough water because they feel its too
“boring”. Can you share any recipes that may entice our readers to drink
PAM:Yes it is actually quite boring! Would absolutely love to share. Here is
one of my favorites ~ Raspberry Mist ~ which comes from the Hyatt Tamaya New
Mexico (page 5 of our Spa Water Book).
This Spa Water is not only refreshing but absolutely beautiful! In addition to
their Excellent flavor, raspberries are full of strong antioxidants and
possess anticancer properties. Limes, known as an immune system boosting fruit,
add a vitamin packed zest!
Raspberry Mist from Hyatt Tamaya:
2 Cartons of raspberries
3 Limes thinly sliced
Ice and water
Method: Layer your beverage pitcher with lime slices and raspberries. Add ice.
Repeat until the server is full. Pour water over the ice and fruit.
