Many of you have heard of the carotenoid Lycopene
, which is a buzz word in not only the medical community but also the skin care world. The benefits of this super antioxidant is miles long and as important as helping to minimize the risk of certain types of cancer
The exciting skin care news is that we can help protect ourselves from the dangerous UV rays by eating lycopene rich foods. According to a study by the British Society for Investigative Dermatology subjects who had higher levels of Lycopene in their diet, (tomato paste was the source) had 33 % more protection against sun burn and damage.
Here is a great website listing food sources and levels of lycopene in each: http://www.leffingwell.com/lycopene.htm
Most of the research I have read claims the highest amounts can be found in tomatoes, especially concentrated forms (tomato paste) and from cooked rather than raw tomatoes. Here is a recipe I make for my husband and I often to get my lycopene fix-hope you enjoy!
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
Put 1 pint organic cherry or grape tomatoes in oven safe dish. Drizzle 1 tbls Olive Oil, pinch of salt and pepper and combine. Roast for 30 minutes.
In a small sauce pan add a few drizzles of olive oil and half a yellow onion chopped and let cook over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add a few cloves chopped garlic for one minute. Add one can of tomato sauce, 1 tbls tomato paste, one pinch of each: red pepper flakes/salt/pepper/thyme (use fresh if you have it) stir and let simmer.
Meanwhile add 1 lb. whole wheat penne pasta to salted boiling water, cook according to directions. Reserve one cup of pasta water. Drain pasta and put back in pot.
Add the roasted tomatoes, the tomato sauce and the pasta water to the pot with pasta. Add lots of fresh basil and Parmesan cheese. Try not to have seconds.
Wedding season is here and the excitement is in the air! Here are three beauty items to keep in your wedding clutch (besides the obvious powder and lipstick) that I had with me on my special day.
A beautiful compact mirror: I loved reapplying my lip gloss because I could take out my super girly compact (and mine was my ‘something blue’). Try a sparkly mirror like this one at Nordstrom.
Deodorant: Not a glamorous item but when your feeling nervous, sweat is sure to follow. I had to re-apply just thinking about my walk down the aisle in 3 1/2 inch heels.
My obvious choice is Donna Karen Deodorant-see link.
Fragrance: I wore a scent that was nice and light but it also wore off on me. Try Vanille Givree des Antilles by La Maison de la Vanille. I get so many compliments on this one and it is the perfect go to fragrance for your tropical honeymoon!
I also kept a piece of advice I received right before the ceremony started in my mind. Enjoy every minute, don’t worry if something is not perfect and enjoy yourself.
Summer is officially here! This is a great time to take inventory of your sun protection and to stock up on your favorite SPF, preparing for those beach/park days ahead for you and your family. I recently tried the Supergoop! SPF for the first time and LOVE it. I bought the SPF 30 for face and body which is a lotion and they also have other options depending on which type of application you prefer (spray, wipes etc). The lotion rubbed in without the ‘attractive’ white streak, was very lightweight and does not sting the eyes, hallelujah!
Key Benefits as listed on the website:
- PA++ UVA/UVB protection
- Very Water Resistant (up to 80 minutes in water)
- Weightless, oil-free hydration
- Paraben-free. Fragrance Free. No Animal Testing.
- TSA Approved for carry-on air travel
I love what I have read about the brand Supergoop!, they take pride in the quality of their products by eliminating harmful ingredients. Looks like I might have found the perfect sunscreen for my little guy and I to share! I will be buying the 24 oz size next time for the Body, that comes with a pump so I can slather away.
Knowing what we now know about the dangers of UV damage it is crucial we protect the little ones (and ourselves of course) with safe and effective products! Time to goop it up.
I heart skincare is about more than the latest lip balm. I truly believe that in order to have beautiful skin you have to have feed your body proper nutrients, get enough sleep and exercise. I do everything in my power to live by this philosophy.
No one in the world, and I mean no one has taught me more than Jillian Michaels in regards to health, fitness and nutrition. I discovered her one day on a local LA radio station, at the time I had never heard of her popular TV show the Biggest Loser. I listened to every radio show where she taught us all about what to eat like organic foods, how to lose weight and so much more. Once that radio show ended (feeling horribly sad and abandoned!) I began to watch the Biggest Loser to get my Jillian fix but it did not stop there.
Since my introduction to her I have bought all of her books (currently listening to Unlimited on my iPod) use her fitness DVD’s (perfect for baby’s nap time which has been the only time I can work out) and faithfully listen to her new podcast on my daily walks (you can find these free podcasts on iTunes http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-jillian-michaels-show/id418368811 ). Do yourself a favor and subscribe to this show, you will be amazed how much you will learn and she is quite entertaining!
This woman is a treasure. If you are at all interested in your health and wellness you will love the tools that Jillian has out there. I feel such gratitude for her and all she has taught me personally. At the end of the day the way we look, the way we feel, how we take care of ourselves-it’s all related. Our best tool is to educate ourselves to know and do better, and it doesn’t hurt to have someone as inspiring as Jillian out there to guide us along.
Me and spray toners, we go hand and hand. I have a new favorite, the Molecular Mist by Sircuit Cosmeceuticals, just in time for summer.
This product is powerfully moisture-boosting, using a combination of deeply hydrating and soothing/calming ingredients. They do without the preservatives, colors and fragrance and we love that. Can also be used as a light-weight moisturizer.
Use it after cleansing but also on top of make-up is great too. Check out this past post where I mention other uses for misting toners/sprays:
You just can’t help saying “ahhhhh” after a couple sprays of Molecular Mist. Check out the website below to read more about the toner and the rest of the line. The list of celebs who enjoy Sircuit is certainly impressive (Leonardo DiCaprio, Natalie Portman and Oprah to name a few).
The neck and décolleté (chest area) are often ignored when it comes to an at-home regimen. In fact, I have seen certain spa/skin care facilities only treat the face as well. We expose our neck and décolleté to the same elements we expose our facial skin to so make sure and do the following:
Cleanse. If you have a Clarisonic brush I suggest adding time for your neck and chest. Check out the link below for Clarisonic info:
Exfoliate and Treat. Treat the skin on your neck and décolleté as you would your face. Pull down each product when you treat.
Sun Protection. Have you ever seen a two-tone face and neck? Yep I bet you have, don’t let this happen to you. Make sure you protect both equally.
I have been pretty inconsistent with my vitamin and supplement intake over the years. Right now I am definitely working on optimizing my health and vitamins have come back into the picture. Of course price always comes into play for me and many people out there so you have to prioritize for your individual needs.
As far as skin goes, there are a few I love and personally take on a daily basis:
Omega 3/Fish Oils– The benefits of this supplement range from skin to brain function to improved mood. It is endless. This is one supplement that you should really buy a good quality capsule to see a difference. As far as skin goes, it is one of the best anti-agers helping with wrinkles and dryness.
Food Sources: Fish, flaxseed, walnuts
Vitamin D– Has been known to help with skin disorders such as acne, Rosacea and eczema. Getting enough Vitamin D (3) is hard to do just from the sun with the dangers of skin cancer these days. It is a great idea to take a supplement to ensure you receive what you need (also great for heart and brain health!).
Food Sources: Milk, cheese, fatty fish
Probiotics-Be careful if you are getting your probiotics in your yogurt. It should be organic otherwise you will be ingesting antibiotics, defeating the point. Ingesting these probiotics can help with aging skin and even acne. Not to mention all of the other benefits of taking them for overall health and immunity protection.
Food Sources: Yogurt, miso, tempeh
Our goal should be to eat as many healthy foods that contain these vitamins in our daily diet. I have added below each supplement, food sources to get the desired vitamin. However, consuming the recommended levels of each vitamin can be impossible at times which is why supplementing is such a great tool.
I have tried many hair treatments in my life. It all started when I hit puberty and my hair became a little, let’s just say unruly. No one could figure out how to tame the beastly curls. One stylist thought a perm would have the opposite effect of curling the hair and straighten it. Nope. I spent years driving to downtown San Diego to a salon for African American hair. Once I had a treatment in Orange County that burnt my scalp, leaving blisters all over my head.
I have come a long way since those days, I have learned what works and know what doesn’t. I have had the Keratin treatment and really liked the results. The cool thing is you still get to keep your curls, it’s not damaging and it makes doing your hair (and life in general) a whole lot easier. It is great for people who just want to get the frizz out. Read more about the benefits here: http://www.keratincomplex.com/ (I like this brand because it is Formaldehyde free.)
If you are in Orange County, I see Madeleyn Marie at Parks Salon. Call for details and pricing: 949) 280-7137
